When it comes to the manufacturing industry in Taiwan, many people may think of the electronics industry first. But in fact, Taiwan also has a strong force in the field of equipment manufacturing - this is the machine tool industry

Recently, Quanzhou Equipment Manufacturing Association organized a delegation to Taiwan to conduct exchanges and inspections. China Industrial News reporters visited the development experience and successful practices of Taiwan's machinery manufacturing

Global operation layout, creating invisible champions

The machine tool is called the “industrial machine”. Taiwan's machine tool industry has risen earlier. In the early 1990s, it has been called the world's “four major machine tools” manufacturing bases with Germany, Japan, and Italy. Silicon Valley in the United States is famous in the world, and Taiwan also has a “valley”, which is called “Precision Machinery Golden Valley” – this “Valley” is a large Taichung area where many machine tool companies gather.

According to the data, there are nearly 2,000 manufacturers in the upper, middle and lower reaches of the Taiwan machine tool industry, of which nearly 90% are concentrated in the Taichung area. The output value per unit area of this area is even ranked first in the world.

In this approach to Taiwan's machinery manufacturing enterprises, China Industrial News reporters visited a number of machine tool manufacturers in Taichung. Most of these companies are invisible champions in the field of segmentation and have extensive experience in global operations.

Founded in 1989, HIWIN Technology Co., Ltd. is one of the world's most complete manufacturers of transmission and control. It is also the world's largest manufacturer of ball screws and the world's second largest manufacturer of linear slides. The professional manufacturer of robots and the world's largest supplier of coordinate robots for semiconductor equipment. The service fields include machinery manufacturing, factory automation, aerospace, electric power, metallurgy and so on. According to Song Xiande, the person in charge of HIWIN Technology, the company has long been engaged in global distribution and division of labor. Currently, it has factories in China, the United States, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Korea. Through global operations and division of labor, HIWIN Technology has become a leader in the field of transmission and control. In 2018, its turnover reached NT$30 billion.

Youjia Group is the world's third largest manufacturer of machine tool tools. With global mergers and acquisitions and acquisitions, it currently has 37 professional brands and 50 production bases worldwide. The group's 96 companies have an output value of approximately US$6.6 billion. In mainland China alone, the Youjia Group has 20 factories; in Germany and Japan, which are highly developed in manufacturing, there are 11 and 16 production bases respectively. Yan Wuliang, deputy general manager of the tool division of Youjia Group, introduced a huge sales network and technical support throughout the world through multi-brand and sub-area operating models. On the road of globalization, Youjia has eclecticism, exerting its own advantages, and drawing on the experience and practices of high-end manufacturing in Germany, Japan and the United States, continuously optimizing and upgrading, and achieving great success. At present, Youjia CNC machine tools rank first in the global automotive field, second in the aerospace field, third in the energy field, and fifth in rail transportation.

Yinghan Technology is one of the world's largest manufacturers and suppliers of metal pipe bending machines, including automotive, aerospace, chemical, food, and home leisure. In 1995, Yinghan developed the world's first fully automatic pipe bending machine with PC-Based as the main control system. By 2003, Yinghan has become a professional partner of GM and other world-renowned automobile manufacturing companies to assist them in developing. High-performance workpieces meet the market demand for new lightweight and energy-saving vehicles. Hu Bingkun, chairman of Yinghan Technology, told reporters that in addition to the pipe bending machine, Yinghan Technology also provides a more competitive automatic control production line and whole plant equipment with the help of global investment.

The development and integration of globalization has brought together talents, technologies and resources from around the world for Taiwanese companies. The exploration of globalization is inseparable from the protection of intellectual property rights. The reporter learned that in terms of patent applications, the number of patent applications in Taiwan is currently the fifth in the world, and the number of patents in important markets such as the United States and the European Union is also at the forefront. Many companies in Taiwan will introduce patent search and analysis service platforms to carry out relevant patent analysis and protection work, as well as a rich patent system training course to enhance the intellectual property protection of enterprises.

Exploring Industry 4.0 proposes to create new thinking

With the wave of Industry 4.0 sweeping across the globe, Taiwan's machine tool industry is also vigorously exploring this aspect. The machinery industry is the third largest industry in Taiwan (unit: NT). During the visit, we saw Taiwanese machinery companies have made positive practices in sensing technology, Internet of Things, big data, robot control, human-machine coordination, and intelligent flexible production systems.

Youjia Group has independently built a “factory private cloud” platform to realize the interconnection and integration of mechanical equipment layer, control system layer and cloud application layer. During the visit, the relevant personnel of the Youjia Group demonstrated some of the functions of the system, including the intelligent supply chain system and the visual warehousing and distribution system. In terms of information construction, Youjia has also undergone a long period of running-in and basic preparation. Yan Wuliang, deputy general manager of the tool division of Youjia Group, believes that the basis of informatization is to make employees willing to use, and to collect in the simplest way. Through the collaboration of the cloud platform, Youjia Group has also achieved optimization of production management.

Fuyu Enterprise Co., Ltd. is one of the top ten machine tool factories in Taiwan. The products are manufactured across a full range of professional tools for vehicles, milling and grinding. The customers include GE, Xi'an Aero Engine Group and Hitachi. In particular, in the field of high-precision requirements and high added value grinding machines, Fuyu has long been the leader in the Taiwan grinding machine industry. In order to achieve a high degree of integration of hardware and software, Fuyu independently developed the industry's leading grinding machine software system. Chen Yufan, product manager of Fuyu Greater China, said that the company originally used the industry-specific software system, but because the software developers did not know enough about the equipment, it did not achieve the best results. To this end, the company is determined to independently develop the grinding machine system, allowing technical staff to learn programming and code from scratch, and to develop their own programmers under the “stupid work”, and finally create an independent grinding machine software system, and trigger the industry to follow suit.

HIWIN Technology believes that manufacturing is not an end, but to meet the needs of mankind. Manufacturing is a service, and service is the source of innovation. In the exchange, HIWIN Technology demonstrated the medical equipment production line based on core transmission technology and precision manufacturing. Through the development of rehabilitation equipment, care equipment and surgical special equipment, HIWIN Technology has become a participant in the quality of human life by automating medical equipment.

Founded in 1954, Taichung Precision Machinery Co., Ltd. has always played a pioneering role in the development of industrial automation in Taiwan. With the advent of the "Industry 4.0" intellectual era, the company adjusted its business strategy and proposed "Industry 4.0 Best Integration Maker" "The new role and positioning." During the visit, the reporter was informed that Taichung Seiki has separately set up a small batch of “Industrial 4.0” production line for operation and production, mainly engaged in CNC lathes and integrated processing machines. Based on the business strategy of “one place, one place, two places, global marketing”, the seven manufacturing bases across the Taiwan Straits and the seven marketing service centers in the world have been established. The mechanical construction of Taiwan has been deeply impressed by the constant temperature preservation, constant humidity control, professional testing and lean management of industrial design and production of key components.
